ART GALLERY IN CAMINO REAL POLANCO MEXICO

Hosted in one of the most representative buildings of contemporary Mexican architecture, Camino Real is also one of the most important buildings of the second half of the 20th century.

The hotel was inaugurated by Mexican President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz in 1968, as the official host hotel for the Olympic games. This project was conceived by architect Ricardo Legorreta as a sculptural space – where each wall and each area was designed to hold unique and exclusive works of art specially created for this space by some of the best artists of the time.

Many of those artists have passed away and have left some of their most representative art in Camino Real Mexico City. Camino Real Mexico City’s guests have the privilege to coexist with the best visual works of the country, including:

Mathias Goeritz–painter, architect, sculptor, designer, urbanist, philosopher, literary, poet, art critic and cultural promoter–was described by his friends as a man full of contradictions, doubts and passions; he expressed man’s most common fears in his art: loneliness, violence and authoritarianism. Goeritz developed the concept of emotional architecture and that of concrete poetry. The majority of his work was done on public spaces. Camino Real Mexico City shows one of his most exceptional works: the famous exterior lattice, located on the main entrance of the hotel. This work exemplifies a blend of both Mexican and Moroccan elements and establishes a visual introduction to another Goeritz work of art, “Exterior space tunnel” (Abstract in Gold) located at the end of the stairway en route to the Cirque Restaurant. This large format piece is reflective of Goeritz’ inspiration from Mexican altar pieces. The gold came from baroque influence, yet it is juxtaposed with the minimalist structure which eliminates any possible religious image. This piece represents material celebration while giving an impression of depth.

Between the two Goeritz pieces we can find the famous “eternal movement” fountain which decorates the hotel entrance and was created by the North American-Japanese sculptor Isamu Noguchi, who was invited by Goeritz to participate in the project. Throughout his career, Noguchi used water as a sculpture material. The eternal movement fountain represents his most innovative work; he captured the traditional and millenary Japanese conjunction of the stone and water with fountains which are completely different from the standard. The man himself transmits tranquility, meditation and balance, just as is perceived when viewing this fountain.

Painting was created during the best period of this very famous artist. It is a simple drawing with few lines, wherein Tamayo applied his vast knowledge about light and color. The gray and violet colors toward the bottom of the mural illuminate the turquoise and give the work the impression of a moving space with life of its own. This piece is considered by experts to be Tamayo’s best work. As with very few Mexican artists, Tamayo made an accurate synthesis of prehispanic roots and popular traditions; he incorporated them to the legacy left from the International vanguard to the culture of the 20th century. Tamayo is one of the most poetic painters of our times.

Also in the hotel you will be able to find two important works from Rodolfo Morales, a Oaxacan painter born in 1925. Located in the Token Internet Café area on the 3rd floor, the pieces were created during the brightest period of this charismatic artists’ life, who was discovered by Rufino Tamayo.

Another artist represented in this visual festivity is Pedro Coronel, born in the state of Zacatecas, Mexico. Coronel lived during a very unique period of Mexican Art: he coexisted with the “Rupture” artists who offered an art with no social content, unlike the muralists, but who rather promoted an art which spoke of pure aesthetics. Coronel’s work, located near the front desk, represents the popular applied to the abstract, with circles on bright colors, hidden planets behind a red mystery.

We can also find at the Friedeberg foyer, named after the work of art located there, “The 16 riddles of a Hindu Astronaut” from Pedro Friedeberg. This artist absorbed the North American optical art trend of the 60s. Zodiac signs, religious symbols, the esoteric and the oriental, form this historic mosaic which contains a symbolic meaning in all its shapes. Pedro Friedeberg was an image architect, painter and sculptor. He brings an element of confusion and surprise to the viewer with his bizarre creations. One of his paintings is located next to the Camino Real Ballroom at the 4th floor. The second work of art from Friedeberg is located next to the hotel’s front desk: a sculpture in the shape of a hand chair.

At the “La Huerta” café we can appreciate a decorative mural from Jose Luis Covarrubias. Jose, whose work is also in the Anthropology Museum, was born into an artistic family, where much of his influence came from his father: Don José Covarrubias, a wonderful amateur painter and big on archeology. Jose was very close to Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco and considered them his teachers.

David Alfaro Siqueiros, Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco were the group of muralists who gave a new concept of the Mexican Visual art. Siqueiros was a painter of big latitudes; he printed the colors of his environment in each of his life’s passions. He incorporated in his work more innovations than the technology offered him, therefore he was always looking for new visual experiments. His art was characterized by dramatic perspectives, robust figures, the audacious use of color and surrealism. Siqueros’ work at the hotel is located in the Presidential Suite and is very unique: it is his only painting with the subject of boats.

On the hotel halls we can find the work of Alejandro Gómez Oropeza, who uses sensuality, eroticism and passion in each work. He describes his art as a reflection of his spirit, comparing it with the joy, sadness and frenzy of a determined period during his life.
