The hotel Puerta Calakmul is an ecological retreat located in Calakmul, Campeche, Mexico. It is a very special place where resting, relaxing and totally disconnecting from your daily routine is natural. It is the closest hotel to the largest archaeological zone and biosphere of Calakmul. It is perfectly situated in the center of the main archaeological sites of the region – Xpuhjil, Becán, Chicanná, Balamkú, Hormigueros, Rio Bec, etc.
In the middle of this jungle, you will be able to experience all the comforts and services required in our 15 cabins, all of them integrated in the natural beauty of the place so as not to disrupt its ambience.
The cabins have either one king size, two or three double beds accommodating up to a maximum of 4 persons in each cabin. All the beds have a canopy. Each room has its own theme and is furnished with a hammock, hot water, ceiling fans, and has either an interior living area or exterior terrace. The weather is usually fresh and air conditioning is not necessary.
The hotel has a restaurant & bar, a swimming pool. There is also a TV room with Sky TV, wireless internet service in the restaurant and at reception.
Guides are available to offer you tours to the different archaeological zones, nature paths in the biosphere or to the bat cave.
If you are a nature lover, you can enjoy walks in the rich flora eco-system of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve (under UNESCO protection) and also view the fauna including jaguars (subject to previous arrangements and confirmation) and/or do some amazing bird watching.
Due to the heat, the best time to tour the reserve is early in the morning. In the Calakmul Reserve you will be able to see toucans, howler and spider monkeys, ocelated turkeys, tapirs, deer, foxes…, and a great variety of birds.
In rainy season, because of the mosquitoes, we strongly suggest the use of insect repellent and if you go into any tours, that you wear pants, fresh large shirts or T-shirts, comfortable shoes and a cap or hat. Two to three days is enough to visit some of the sites and take some walks of the tours into the Calakmul Reserve. But to disconnect totally and just relax, more is definitely recommended. Then you can visit the sites in the morning and relax in the afternoon.
If needed, you can rent a car in Chetumal or Palenque. Gasoline is also available in Xpuhil, 60 Kms (36 miles) from the hotel. It is possible to book a taxi from the hotel. But it would be best to know in advance as there are very few available in the area and to visit the sites, they will need to stay and wait for you.
